what the best way to send a letter from st louis mo united states to brussels belgium?

My girlfriend is going to brussels, belgium and we are writing letters (cooler than email for sure) back and forth from st louis missouri. For a standard letter what methods are normally used? I checked ups and fedex and it was 35 or more dollars. Is there some slower way that might only cost a few bucks?
