What are schools like in East St.Louis, are they still bad as they were in the 80s and 90s?

I am reading a book called “Savage Inequalities” and it’s about school life for american children. In the first chapter it talks about East St.Louis. It seems very dangerous and depressing. However, this book was published in 1991. Is it still as bad?

no it’s gotten a lot better since then, mainly due to government help
